We always think about the Doctor being the selfish one in this relationship because we’ve seen it backwards but in reality, it was River. She knew exactly how much he would love her. She knew how much they would mean to each other, and yet she still dies for him. Leaving him to live on with her and without her.
How does one keep living knowing that the best part of you is already gone? You don’t. That’s why her Doctor made a screwdriver and saved her in the Library. She would always be there to him.
You know what the true insanity of their relationship is? That in dying to save his younger self, she scarified the rest of him. And the selfish madman is ok with that, as long as her past gets to haunt him.
I want to get hurt. A car accident, anything. I want to get injured enough to wind up in a hospital, just to see if anyone would come to make sure I’m okay. And I’d pretend to be sleeping or dying so in case anyone actually did come, they would sit at the edge of my bed, crying, and tell me everything. I want to hear everything they’ve ever thought of me, how they really feel, if they’re sorry for anything. I just want to know the truth. And I want to know who truly cares about me.
